π .S3M format definition relies on audio modules integrated, applied and opened by Scream Tracker 3.0 and consequent editions of the software solution. Particularly, the .S3M extension basis includes music patterns and sound samples, that serve to define what notes precisely are being played back by the music samples. On the logic and build-up, the .S3M composition is quite similar to the .MOD object entry. However, .S3M principle allows up to 16 audio tracks to be opened up and played back simultaneously on the corresponding musical layer. Furthermore, it should also be specified that the Scream Tracker suite of v.1 and 2 editions is capable of storing and handling audio compositions and songs as .STM-constituted file layers.
π .S3M file resources and instances can be accurately opened up and explored by various audio players and trackers, able to decompose the original audio track on the set of distinct layers and extract the notes from the source melody, being played back. Among such software instances, Winamp, Schism Tracker, VLC, Myriad Harmony Assistant should be specified, in addition to outdated MODPlug Player and CocoModX, currently remaining in discontinued maintenance status. The .S3M schema file objects can be uncovered in any desktop operating system, either on macOS, Linux or Windows devices. The .S3M technology serves as a modern, more widely supported and more versatile replacement of archaic .STM foundation.
